Dutch Homeless Cup: for a society where nobody is offside

Set up in the Beestenmarkt plaza one day was a futsal/street soccer court for the Dutch Homeless Cup.

I thought this was a great inititative by the Dutch government and other corporate sponsors to support the homeless through such a creatively different and universally engaging way as football. The website lists aims such as: social and community re-integration, inclusion, involvement and cohesion; self-esteem, confidence, and structure and regularity in the lives of members; a change from the negative portrayal of homeless people. With that in mind, on the day we stood by and watched as "The Murderers" beat "The Rapists" - only joking.

In all seriousness however, I did admire the provision made for the homeless and the seriousness with which everyone participated. How the most disadvantaged are treated and cared for, in addition to its great achievements, is the mark of a great nation.
